Smith & Yarn

Portland, Oregon’s acclaimed family music artists Aaron Nigel Smith's and Red Yarn's lyrics celebrate unity, activism and friendship with a warm and inviting ease. 

Aaron Nigel Smith is a GRAMMY® nominated producer, teaching artist and nonprofit leader. He starred in the PBS kids show Between the Lions, runs an international music education program called 1 World Chorus, and co-produced All One Tribe, an album of 25 Black family music artists that is currently up for a GRAMMY®. Red Yarn, aka Andy Furgeson, is an award-winning Texas-born family folk-rocker and puppeteer with seven albums, several video series, and extensive national touring under his belt. With his busy performance schedule, he has built devoted followings in Portland and beyond.  

Smith & Yarn have featured guest vocals by country powerhouse Rissi Palmer, family reggae star Father Goose, activist-rapper SaulPaul, Karen Kalafatas of Karen K and the Jitterbugs, and Portland kindie rockers Kelli Welli, Mo Phillips. Instrumentalists include Jake Blount, Ben Hunter, and Brian Farrow (all leaders in the Black string band revival), family music pioneers Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer (banjo and mandolin), reggae stalwarts Jubba White (drums) and Dale Haslam (bass), kindie super-producer Dean Jones (keys, trombone, percussion), and Portland country luminary Paul Brainard (pedal steel and dobro). Their new album will be distributed by Tuff Gong International, the label formed by reggae music legend Bob Marley. 

123 Andrés

123 Andrés, the husband-wife team of Andrés and Christina, has performed for audiences across the US and in Puerto Rico, Panama, Mexico and Colombia at venues including Wolf Trap (Vienna, VA), Symphony Space (NYC) and the Coliseo in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Andrés grew up in Bogotá, Colombia, and learned how to play the guitar from his father as a child. At age eight, he studied clarinet at the Conservatory and had his first studio experience. He went on to earn a Doctorate in music and won first prize in the National Composition Contest in Colombia for one of his early songs. Christina was raised in the US in a Spanish-speaking family from Colombia and studied theater and dance as a child. After serving as a classroom teacher in public schools and earning a Master's in Education from Penn, she found her mission in teaching through music.

123 Andrés performs for students from early childhood through sixth grade and for family audiences at theaters, festivals, libraries and other venues, putting on joy-filled shows that get everyone singing and moving. 123 Andrés’ fourth album, Canta las Letras, is designed to help children learn about letters and letter sounds in Spanish with music and movement. Initially intended for the classroom, the collection of 38 songs and videos, a collaboration with Benchmark Education Company, is being made available to families everywhere to join in the learning and fun. Their debut, ¡Uno, Dos Tres Andrés! en español y en inglés was released in 2015 and nominated for a Latin Grammy later that year. Arriba Abajo followed in 2016 and won the Latin Grammy for Best Children’s Music Album and the Parents’ Choice Gold Award. La Luna is their third album and was lauded by Billboard: “Welcome daytime singalong songs as well as good-night music to put in steady rotation.” 123 Andrés has been featured by outlets like NPR, the Boston Globe, Washington Post, CNN en Español, Univisión, Telemundo and SiriusXM’s Kids Place Live. 123 Andrés’ first children’s book was published by Scholastic in 2020.

Elena Moon Park & Friends

Elena Moon Park is a musician, educator, and producer living in Brooklyn, NY. She is a freelance violinist and multi-instrumentalist in NYC, specializing in contemporary classical and family music. She has performed on stages ranging from Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center to the Southbank Centre and the Melbourne International Arts Festival. She is also co-artistic Director of the Brooklyn-based arts organization Found Sound Nation, which uses collaborative music creation to connect people across cultural divides.

Originally from Oak Ridge, TN, Elena studied anthropology and ethnomusicology at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, and completed her M.A. in Urban Policy from The New School in New York. Before moving to NYC, Elena briefly served as a development consultant for grassroots social justice organizations on Chicago's south and west sides. While pursuing an urban policy degree from The New School, she began performing and touring the world with the all-ages folk rock band Dan Zanes and Friends, singing and playing violin, trumpet, mandolin, jarana, spoons and musical saw.

In 2010, she began working with Bang on a Can's Found Sound Nation, designing collaborative music creation workshops. In 2012, Found Sound Nation partnered with the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to launch OneBeat. This annual global music diplomacy program brings musicians together from around the globe to the U.S. each fall for one month of creative collaboration, performance and engagement with communities. 

In 2012, Elena also released her debut all-ages album, Rabbit Days and Dumplings, featuring reimagined folk and children's music from East Asia. Elena continues to perform with all-ages musicians Sonia De Los Santos and leads her own all-ages folk rock band, Elena Moon Park and Friends. She released a second all-ages album, Unhurried Journey, in the summer of 2020.

Lucy Kalantari and Jazz Cats

Lucy Kalantari is an artist, composer, producer and engineer with two GRAMMY® Awards, one Latin Grammy nomination, and a growing list of accolades for her excellence in songwriting. She is one of the songwriters for the new “Dora,” now on Paramount+ and internationally on Nick Jr.

Passionate about creating children’s media that brings joy, inspires community and highlights the power of resilience, Kalantari focuses her efforts on both Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats releases and a diverse collection of artists, bringing their sonic vision to life. She has worked with GRAMMY®-Nominated and winning artists Joanie Leeds, Flor Bromley, SaulPaul, Uncle Jumbo, Andrew & Polly, Fyütch, Miss Katie and many more.

Born of Latine descent and raised in the Dominican Republic for part of her life, she writes in English and Spanish, making it accessible to a broader audience. Kalantari’s songs have been featured on PBS Kids Jam and Universal Kids (NBC Universal Television). They can often be found topping the charts on SiriusXM Kids Place Live and other family programs nationwide. Highlight performances by Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats include Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Kennedy Center and Symphony Space, to name a few.

As a full-time music creator and a mother to an 11-year-old musician, she still makes time for mentorship programs to help shape the minds of emerging music creators. She serves as a SoundBoard mentor for We Are Moving the Needle, striving to correct the balance in an industry where women and non-binary individuals are underrepresented. She’s also a mentor for GRAMMY U and an active member of the Recording Academy.

Lucy Kalantari stands as a multifaceted and influential figure in the music industry, making significant contributions as an artist, a producer and as a mentor, actively working towards positive change and inclusivity in the field. 

Pierce Freelon is a GRAMMY® nominated artist, picture book author and podcaster. His GRAMMY® nominated children’s music albums AnceStars (2023) and Black to the Future (2021) have been featured on Today Show, NPR and Billboard. He has written songs for the PBS Kids animated series’ Alma’s Way and Work it Out Wombats! Pierce is the author of two children's picture books with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers: Daddy and Me: Side by Side (2023) and Daddy-Daughter Day (2022). He is co-creator of the PBS Kids podcast Jamming on the Job and is the voice of its star Beat-master BoomBox! Pierce is a Dad to two creative and hilarious kids, loves reading Octavia Butler books with his wife of 16 years, and aspires to dunk a basketball with two hands as a 40-year-old.

Pierce is a former Durham City Councilman who has traveled the world educating youth about Hip Hop, beat making and Black culture. He founded Blackspace, a digital maker space offering teens free programming rooted in Afrofuturism. Pierce co-founded Beat Making Lab, an Emmy Award-winning PBS web series. He is the writer, composer and co-director of the animated series History of White People in America, an official selection of the Tribeca Film Festival. He has taught in the departments of Political Science, Music and African, African American and Diaspora Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University.
