AJ Lee & Blue Summit are an award-winning, energetic, charming and technically jaw-dropping band quickly rising on the national roots music scene. Based in Santa Cruz, California, the group met as teenagers, picking and jamming together as kids at local bluegrass festivals until one day, they decided they would be a band. 

Currently made up of AJ Lee on mandolin, fiddler Jan Purat and guitarists Scott Gates and Sullivan Tuttle, the band carries that youthful, festival-parking-lot energy with them still today, but at the same time there’s a genuine ease and confidence to their music making.

Their new album, City of Glass is a slow burn, remarkable when considered alongside records released by their peers in recent years. Lee & Blue Summit seem unconcerned with mimicking or emulating other successful groups in their scenes. Instead, they are most interested in discovering themselves, their own music and sonics and textures truly their own.

City of Glass, as a result, is an album that is just as much country soul and gritty, bluesy Americana as it is rock club and festival-ready string band fare, all framed through a California folk lens while clearly primed for a much wider audience. 

AJ Lee & Blue Summit are an exemplary band so unconcerned with being remembered, with being enshrined, that they have gone about making a set of songs that will surely be held onto and cherished forever. City of Glass may one day crumble, but this music will never fade away. 

Po’ Ramblin’ Boys

In 10 years as a band, the Po’ Ramblin’ Boys have covered a lot of miles sharing their love of bluegrass with audiences drawn to their hard-charging, true-blue sound. “We live what we play and sing about,” says bandleader C.J. Lewandowski. 

Indeed, hard work and deep feeling are baked into their songs, which have been celebrated with a Grammy nomination and International Bluegrass Music Association recognition ranging from the Emerging Artist of the Year award to a nomination for Entertainer of the Year. 

Shelby Means

Born in the bluegrass of Kentucky and raised on Wyoming’s high plains, Shelby Means is one of the foremost bassists in bluegrass, with nearly two decades of experience in bluegrass, folk, rock, Americana and country outfits. Now based in Charleston, SC, during her tenure in Nashville she was a member of the incredibly impactful Grammy nominated bluegrass band of all women, Della Mae. With Della Mae and others, she has traveled to more than 20 countries around the world spreading musical diplomacy. 

Means is also one half of roots duo Sally & George with her husband and collaborator, Sol Driven Train’s Joel Timmons. With Timmons, Mary Lucey and Billy Cardine, she co-founded another group, Lover’s Leap, a genre blurring, heart-led Americana band. Means is a member of Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, with whom she gained her first Grammy win for their 2023 album, City of Gold. She’s also received more than a handful of awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association for her work with Della Mae and Golden Highway.

Means is a driving player with a deep pocket, a singular stage presence and a magnetic, centered approach to the upright bass. Beyond her work on the instrument, she is also an accomplished songwriter and a heartfelt vocalist whose voice is rooted in tradition while authentically her own. With her debut solo music, slated for release in 2025, Means invites listeners to experience the same soulful presence and adventurous spirit she has built her career on. Her singing and playing has been heard across the country and around the world, from NPR’s airwaves, the Grand Ole Opry, Bonnaroo, Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Newport Folk to the U.S. Virgin Islands, Kazakhstan, Australia and beyond.

 It took four quick years for Mason Via to become one of the newest leaders of modern-day American roots music. During that whirlwind period, he toured the world as a member of Old Crow Medicine Show, earned a Grammy nomination for his work on the band's chart-topping album Jubilee, contributed songs to Grammy Winning and Nominated records by Molly Tuttle and Del McCoury Band and released his solo debut, New Horizons. The momentum continues with Mason Via, a self-titled solo record that balances the progressive with the timeless, reintroducing Mason as a southern storyteller and sharp-eyed singer/songwriter steeped in the bluegrass tradition.

With its acoustic arrangements and top-shelf flat-picking, the new self-titled album Mason Via was inspired by the music Mason heard as a child in Appalachia, raised in two mountain towns that straddled the Virginia/North Carolina border. One parent lived in Danbury, NC; the other lived in Patrick County, VA. Mason spent time in both homes, absorbing the musical traditions of an area that hosted fiddler conventions, banjo competitions and campfire jams.

A naturally gifted singer, Mason began playing the acoustic guitar and mandolin, winning regional competitions while still a teenager. He started writing his own songs, too. By the early 2020s, he'd already flown the flag for bluegrass and folk music on prime-time TV as an American Idol contestant, completed multiple tours as the youngest member of Old Crow Medicine Show and collaborated with artists like Sierra Ferrell — another Appalachian export who, like him, put her own spin on the music of the mountains. 

Mason Via grew up with bluegrass music. It's in his blood. With "Mason Via",  he stakes his claim as one of the genre's native sons, coming home after years away to build something new. 

The Fretliners

It is rare for there to exist a defining moment that changes the trajectory of four lives at once. But, clear as a lightning bolt in an open field, so electric was the moment The Fretliners first played together around a single microphone in the Cloverlick banjo shop barn one fateful evening, they knew they would be inseparable from that moment on.

The Fretliners (Tom Knowlton - guitar, Sam Parks - mandolin, Dan Andree - fiddle, Taylor Shuck - bass) are a genuine and powerful bluegrass quartet recognized for their songwriting and undeniable chemistry. Their newfound camaraderie produces an energy that is as infectious on stage as it is on record. So much so that in the summer of 2023, they won both band competitions at Telluride Bluegrass and Rockygrass Festivals, a feat that had only been accomplished once before. That September, they released their debut eponymous album to acclaim and adoration.

With one eye on the rear-view, inspired by that traditional high lonesome sound, The Fretliners navigate a road less traveled into the peaks of Rocky Mountain original bluegrass.

Nevada Old-Time Fiddlers Association

The Nevada Old-Time Fiddlers Association was founded in 2003 by a dedicated group of musicians with a shared passion for traditional fiddle music. What began as informal jam sessions in garages and community centers quickly evolved into an organized effort to create a local chapter under the National Old-Time Fiddlers Association. Founding members Jeanne Rozzi, Herb Rozzi, Darla Sorenson, Mark Farrow, JD Jones and Rita Jones invested countless hours researching, organizing and building the foundation of the group. With a focus on old-time fiddle tunes and a touch of bluegrass, the Nevada Old-Time Fiddlers Association became a welcoming space for players of all skill levels to gather, learn and play together. Thanks to their hard work and the continued support of its members, the group remains an active and growing part of Nevada's music community.

The Hollerbodies

The Hollerbodies are a four-piece Las Vegas-based bluegrass band who have been performing together for the last two years and quietly making quite a name for themselves. Featuring fiddle virtuoso James Anderson and Dale Sarles on banjo and vocals, the group is rounded out by 2 former members of legendary local bluegrass group Out of the Desert with Brian Burns on upright bass and John Lundmark on guitar. Performing a mix of traditional and contemporary bluegrass, this band's strong musical soloists and 3 part vocals bring fresh perspectives to traditional music.
