American Patchwork Quartet
American Patchwork Quartet (APQ), led by multi-GRAMMY® award-winning guitarist/vocalist Clay Ross, binds timeless American folk songs with jazz sophistication, country twang, West African hypnotics, and East Asian ornamentation. APQ’s sound is a masterful confluence of tradition and innovation, transcending culture, politics, and ideology. Their debut was recently nominated for “Best Folk Album” at the 67th GRAMMY® Awards.
A southern-born roots music aficionado, Ross is also the founder of the world-renowned Gullah group Ranky Tanky. In APQ, Ross intertwines with other Grammy-winning artists: Harini Raghavan, a Carnatic vocalist and violinist, Moto Fukushima, an internationally acclaimed Issei jazz bassist, and Rudy Royston, a renowned jazz drummer whose fibers were honed by African American church traditions.
APQ resonates as a potent symbol of unity in diversity. It stands testament to the notion that, from a collage of varied backgrounds, a coherent and beautiful whole can be fashioned. Mirroring America’s cultural mosaic, APQ stitches together a story that’s both intricate and resilient. The fabric of their music is genuine—it neither feigns tolerance nor presents an overly-embellished image of unity.
Instead, each carefully chosen piece dives deep into America’s patchwork soul and shares the joys, sorrows, and unwavering hope of a nation crafted by shared dreams and diverse histories. Far from being a haphazard collection of musical scraps, APQ is a deliberately designed homage to America’s past and a showcase of its dynamic present. It beckons listeners to meditate upon our shared identity and relish in the musical threads that bind us. Just as an intricately designed quilt becomes a cherished family heirloom, when the distinct patterns of APQ’s music align in perfect harmony, the result is both a blanket of warmth and a timeless treasure.
Farofa
Celebrated as a pivotal new sound on the Brazilian and World Music scenes, Farofa delivers a passion-filled, electrifying performance of traditional rhythms blended with modern stylings and influences. Their signature sound is amplified by an eclectic collection of ideas and inspirations drawn from rock, jazz, contemporary classical, pop, deep African rhythmic tradition and, above all, from the entire musical universe of their native Brazil.
Having been labeled as “engaging,” “dynamic” and “captivating” by the venues they’ve headlined, and honored as the recipients of the California Presenters Spotlight Award, as well as runners-up at the Samsung E-Festival 2016, there is no denying that Farofa’s passion and dedication to performing fresh, new music continues to shine through at every show. Whether it’s a small, intimate presentation or on-stage at a world music festival, Farofa is sure to deliver a musical experience not to be missed.
Ryanhood
"Named ‘Best Group/Duo’ in the International Acoustic Music Awards, acoustic-duo Ryanhood got their first break as street-performers at Boston’s Quincy Market. It was there that they were spotted by a college booking agent and thrust into the college touring scene, where Campus Activities Magazine would name them “one of the most requested acts by college buyers all across the country.” They’ve since gone on to perform more than a thousand shows in 47 U.S. states over the past decade, and have shared stages with Jason Mraz, Matt Nathanson, Train, and many more.
And, their star is still on the rise. Ryanhood was recently named the “Discovery of the Year” by John Platt at WFUV in New York City, and was a featured act at Australia’s National Folk Festival in 2018.
Their latest album Under the Leaves, sees the pair’s lead guitarist Ryan David Green stepping into the role of sole producer, weaving a tapestry of lush strings and rich harmonies. The album, like their shows, is driven by strong acoustic guitar performances and is at turns energetic, hopeful, and quietly moving—a musical invitation to breathe, and to soak in a river of melodies and harmonic hooks.
Cameron Hood, the band’s primary lyricist, has waded into those musical rivers with dream-like verses about seeds and forests, breath and wind, and the cycles and seasons that frame our lives. Throughout the album’s songs, a question is asked: How do we create meaningful and lasting change in a world filled with division and turmoil? The offer on Under the Leaves is to slow down and face the one thing we have the power to change - ourselves - as the duo sings on the album’s second track, “the only revolution is the one within.”
Green and Hood currently reside in their hometown of Tucson, Arizona, where they have won more than a dozen Tucson Music Awards including “Best Folk Band” and “Best Rock Band” (you can decide for yourself which is most accurate)."(Source: ryanhood.com/about)
