Household Hazardous Wastes includes the following: 

• Paint

• Oil/Gasoline (Limit 5 gallons, measured by container capacity)

• Pesticide/Fertilizer

• Flammable liquids

• Aerosol cans

• Drain & Oven Cleaners

• Adhesives

• Batteries

These household hazardous wastes can be disposed of at Republic Services Household Hazardous Waste Drop off locations. For a list of drop off locations, days, and times, go to the HHW information portion of Republic Services Website.

Other Places to Dispose of Materials

Light Bulbs & Batteries: Residents can throw incandescent light bulbs and batteries (not automotive) in the trash. However, incandescent or florescent (not tube) light bulbs and batteries can also be taken to select Home Depot or Lowe’s, free of charge, to be recycled. Call your neighborhood store, before you go to verify.

Used oil and antifreeze can be taken to Pep Boys free of charge to be recycled. Other auto parts retailers may also accept used oil. 

Never discharge chlorinated pool water to the gutter. The same chemicals that prevent algae from growing in your pool can poison plants and fish in Lake Mead. Per COH Municipal Code 14.14.100:

•  Drain your pool to your sanitary sewer cleanout

• If your home is on a septic tank, dechlorinate water before draining your pool to the gutter.

Identify what kind of smoke detector you have.

There are two general types of smoke detectors: ionization, which contain a small amount of the radioactive material Americium 241, and photoelectric, which do not contain any radioactive material. If you have an ionization smoke detector, the small amount of Americium 241 is not harmful to human health but it still needs to be properly disposed of. Smoke detectors with radioactive material are required by law to have a warning label, generally on the back of the detector facing the mounting base.

Contact the manufacturer of your smoke detector to find out if they offer a free or low cost take-back program.

Before disposal remove any batteries and recycle them. If you have an end of life photoelectric or ionization smoke detector and the manufacturer does not have a take back program you can place the smoke detector in the trash.

Compressed flammable gas cylinders include but are not limited to BBQ propane tanks, camp stove tanks, portable heater tanks, etc. To dispose of a propane tank, return it to the vendor. If this is not an option, Republic Services will collect it as part of their residential household hazardous waste program.

If the tank is not empty companies like Blue Rhino will dispose of it. If the tank is empty, safely remove the valve and bring it to Nevada Recycling or Vegas Propane.

For a camp stove tank, empty the tank (burn off material) and then you can dispose of the tank in the trash.

No, as it will clog the sewer line and cause a sewage backup. During the holiday season, drop-off locations for used cooking oil are set up at locations throughout the valley. Any time of year, used oil can be poured in a leak-proof glass jar or soaked up with cat litter and disposed of it in the garbage, or taken to Republic Services Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Locations.

Medication can be disposed of in the following ways:

• Find a medicine take back program or a disposal station.
  • Drug Disposal | Drug Disposal Locator Tool | Medication Disposal (safe.pharmacy)
  • Police Station Disposal (excluding COH)
  • DEA Medication take back. Occurs every April and October (4th or 5th Saturday of the month). Find out more at Take Back Day (dea.gov)
• Dispose in household trash
  • Medicine Disposal

If the electronic device still works donate it to Goodwill. If it does not work Batteries Plus, the Blind Center of Nevada, and NV State Recycle will accept electronic waste.
