Recognizing Warning Signs of Suicide
Understanding and recognizing the warning signs of suicide can be crucial in providing timely support to someone in need. If you or someone you know is displaying any of the following behaviors, it’s important to seek help immediately by calling the Lifeline at 988.
Warning Signs to Watch For:
- Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves
- Looking for ways to end their life, such as searching online or purchasing a firearm
- Expressing feelings of hopelessness or having no reason to live
- Describing feelings of being trapped or in unbearable pain
- Mentioning being a burden to others
- Increasing use of alcohol or drugs
- Displaying anxious or agitated behavior; acting recklessly
- Experiencing significant changes in sleep patterns (either too little or too much)
- Withdrawing from social interactions or isolating themselves
- Showing signs of rage or talking about seeking revenge
- Exhibiting extreme mood swings
