The plan can include emergency supplies, meeting locations, and additional essentials to assist the special needs of household members.

Plan Together

• In an emergency, certain types of communication may be unavailable. Provide each member of your household with a contact information card listing alternative ways you and your family members can contact each other. This should include an out-of-town contact. This card should be carried in a wallet or purse at all times.
• Keep important family information and documents (such as copies of insurance, identification, and medical records) in a secure location, or on a protected flash drive. Also consider keeping a list of valuables and personal possessions.
• Establish several possible escape routes from your home.
• Be sure everyone in the household understands how to shut off utilities (natural gas, water, electricity) safely.
• Learn CPR and how to use a fire extinguisher.

 You should also keep a kit of emergency supplies, with at least three days of:

• Water (one gallon per day per person)
• Non-perishable food
• Battery or hand crank powered radio
• Prescription medicines
• First aid kit
• Personal hygiene supplies (toothpaste, soap, contact lens solution)
• Also consider keeping an emergency supply kit at your work, and in your vehicle.

Preparing Your Business

To protect their employees, their services, and to ensure a positive future, developing and establishing an emergency is a must for any business.

• Perform a risk and hazard assessment. In addition to large scale disasters, planning for workplace violence, power outages, fires and flooding is vital to your success. 
• Identify essential functions and maintain insurance. Determine what activities and locations are required for you to maintain operations. Verify you have appropriate coverage. 
• Identify key resources. What personnel, records, inventory, processes, etc. are vital for you to continue operations. 
• Develop and maintain plans. Plans can save money, time, and even lives. Keep plans updated and keep staff informed. 
• Promote preparedness among employees. Those who feel safe and prepared are more likely to perform duties during and after an incident. 
• Train, test, and exercise! Exercises can help individuals understand their role and respond more appropriately.

Participate in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program trains people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities. When emergencies occur, CERT members can provide critical support to the first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve the safety of the community.

The City of Las Vegas' Office of Emergency Management provides training for and coordinates the CERT program for the Las Vegas Valley. CERT training includes disaster preparedness, fire suppression, basic disaster medical operations, and light search and rescue operations.

Hazard Mitigation—What Does It Mean?

As defined in Title 44 of the Code of Federal Regulations, hazard mitigation is “any action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from natural hazards.” As such, hazard mitigation is any work to minimize the impacts of any type of hazard event before it occurs.

 

Hazard mitigation aims to reduce losses from future disasters. It is a process in which hazards are identified and profiled, the people and facilities at risk are analyzed, and mitigation actions to reduce or eliminate hazard risk are developed. The implementation of the mitigation actions, which include short and long-term strategies that may involve planning, policy changes, programs, projects, and other activities, is the end result of this process.
