At Henderson Animal Protection Services, one of our top priorities is keeping pets in loving homes whenever possible. We understand that life can bring unexpected challenges that may lead some owners to consider surrendering their pets to a shelter.

Before taking that step, we encourage you to explore shelter diversion and pet retention resources that may help you keep your pet at home. Our staff is here to support you in finding practical, compassionate solutions.

What Is Shelter Diversion?

We frequently hear from pet owners who are considering surrendering their animals for reasons such as:

Financial constraints (e.g., can’t afford food or veterinary care)
Housing issues (e.g., pet restrictions or temporary homelessness)
Behavioral challenges
Life transitions (e.g., job loss, new baby, divorce, illness)

Shelter diversion is a proactive approach aimed at reducing the number of animals entering shelters by helping pet owners resolve the issues leading to surrender.

Many people who surrender their pets would have kept them if they had access to affordable services or support. That’s why we are committed to removing barriers to pet retention and supporting the human-animal bond.

Surrendering Your Animal

If you have decided to surrender your pet, you must schedule an appointment with Henderson Animal Protection Services.

Appointments are scheduled a minimum of 14 days in advance. Owners must provide proof of their current residency in the City of Henderson to be eligible. Upon arrival at your appointment, you must provide the following:

A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID
Proof of ownership of the animal (veterinary records, microchip registration, and/or other substantial proof of ownership)
A utility bill dated within the past 60 days showing the pet owner’s name and Henderson address

APS staff will call prior to your appointment to discuss your reason for surrendering your pet and to provide potential resources. We are here to help, not to judge. Sterilized kitten/cat: $50
Intact kitten/cat: $80
Sterilized puppy/dog: $50
Intact puppy/dog: $80
Potbellied pig: $100
Miscellaneous small animals: $20

End of Life Services

We understand that making the decision to euthanize a beloved pet is deeply emotional and is never taken lightly. Our goal is to support pet owners with compassion and provide guidance during difficult times.

Euthanasia should always be considered a last resort, only when an animal is suffering due to severe illness, injury, or age-related decline, and when all other options have been explored. If you're struggling with your pet's health or behavior, we strongly encourage you to speak with a licensed veterinarian to fully understand the prognosis and available treatment options.

Inability to Care for Pets

Owner-Requested Euthanasia

In cases where euthanasia is deemed necessary, and after all other alternatives have been considered, Henderson APS can provide or refer you to humane euthanasia services.

Pet owners may request euthanasia services by scheduling an appointment online.

Owners must provide proof of their current residency in the City of Henderson to be eligible. Upon arrival at your appointment, you must provide the following:

A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID
Proof of ownership of the animal (veterinary records, microchip registration, and/or other substantial proof of ownership)
A utility bill dated within the past 60 days showing the pet owner’s name and Henderson address

Euthanasia is emotionally taxing for both owners and our staff. Because of this, euthanasia services are only performed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Owners are not permitted to be in the room with their pet during the procedure, and we are unable to return pet cremains/ashes to owners.

While we do our best to accommodate our residents in end-of-life decisions for their pets, Henderson APS has a partnership with Tropicana Animal Hospital to provide reduced-pricing euthanasia services for those who are unable to at our facility. This service is exclusively available to Henderson residents.

Upon verification, a reduced-cost voucher will be issued that can be redeemed at Tropicana Animal Hospital for walk-in service 24/7—no appointment necessary. Please contact our office directly to learn more and receive a referral.
