Animal Protection Services by the Numbers

Animal Protection Services shared an update during the May 19 Council Meeting, highlighting meaningful progress and the continued dedication of staff and volunteers serving both animals and our community. City leadership and City Council continue to strongly support the progress and work at Animal Protection Services and the shelter.

That progress includes a 91% live release rate, surpassing the industry benchmark of 90% and marking significant improvement over the past two years. The update also highlighted operational advancements and key accomplishments.

A formal shelter diversion program with NV SPCA, was announced and is coming later this summer. This new program will assist pet owners with additional resources to keep their pet with them.

Additional Information

About Henderson Animal Protection Services

Animal Protection Services consists of Animal Protection Officers, Shelter staff, and a Veterinary team. The team helps reunite lost pets with their owners, cares for the animals brought to the shelter, and handles pet adoptions. The animals at the shelter receive medical care, vaccines, microchips and all adoptable dogs, cats, and rabbits are spayed or neutered.

Animal Protection officers take part in public safety, resolving animal and pet issues that are part of residents' quality of life. The officers carry out the regulations outlined in the municipal code's Title 7, which include concerns about animal noise and animal sanitation, animals roaming at large, and Dangerous dog regulations. Animal Protection Services also performs welfare, cruelty and neglect investigations, animal bite processing, and rabies quarantines.

An ordinance was passed by City Council on August 3, 2010 for the City of Henderson requiring that dogs and cats over the age of four months be spayed or neutered, except under specified circumstances.
