TO MESSAGE A 2
HENDERSONHAPPENINGS | Winter 2019 | January-April Dear Neighbors,
As a Premier Community, Henderson’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of our residents by
providing the best public services possible. We also believe it is vital that you have access to timely
information regarding city services that you depend upon. With this in mind, Henderson Happenings is
expanding its coverage to include all city services. In addition, the brochure now will be available for
you to view digitally on our city website.
We are very excited about this change and look forward to communicating with our residents on a
variety of topics from transportation services, to affordable housing, to senior sports. Beginning with this
issue, we will focus on a theme in each brochure that will highlight one of the city’s top priorities. But
don’t worry, Henderson Happenings will still contain all the wonderful Parks and Recreation information
it always has!
The theme of this issue is Henderson’s vibrant senior community. The city manages a variety of
innovative programs and services that specifically focus on this important segment of our community,
which you can read more about on the city’s website. One of our most popular services is the Heritage
Park Senior Facility, which provides a variety of programming ranging from art and cooking to dance
and exercise programs, in addition to social and wellness services designed to meet the needs of
Henderson’s active 50+ population.
The City of Henderson is constantly seeking new ways to provide the types of programs and services
that make Henderson a great place to call home. Our recent Senior Citizens Advisory Committee survey
provided us with additional insight into the needs and desires of our senior community and we are using
the responses to assist us in the development of more effective and efficient public amenities.
Thank you for your continued support of our efforts to provide exceptional service to our residents. We hope you will enjoy our new Henderson Happenings format and look
forward to hearing your comments.
Mayor Debra March
Henderson is a great place to call home for over 310,000 residents, and anyone who lives here can see how committed we are to keeping our community a welcoming
place for all ages. We are not alone in this view. Recently, Henderson was accepted into the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) network of Age Friendly
Communities based on eight categories of livability. This acceptance is a testament to the value we place on our senior community and we are extremely proud of this
highly coveted recognition.
Our city is focused on providing this population with the supportive community features that enhance personal independence, allow residents to age in place, and foster
residents’ engagement in the community’s civic, economic and social life.
To achieve these goals, our City Council accepted the Age Friendly Henderson Action Plan based on 44 recommendations from our resident survey and Senior Citizens
Advisory Committee. This led to our development of creative strategies that will continue to make Henderson a premier community for our residents.
A significant feature of being an Age Friendly Community means that Henderson will continue to be a city that is safe and secure. In fact, we are one of the safest
communities in the country, which is a direct result of the city budget dedicating 57 percent of general fund
revenues to public safety.
In addition, we will continue to direct our efforts to ensure our “50 & Better” community has access to affordable
and appropriate housing and transportation options. Henderson currently supports numerous programs, initiatives
and partnerships in these areas that assist many in this community.
As we move closer to achieving the goals we have set for our city, it is important to keep in mind that age-friendly
communities benefit all ages and abilities. That is why the City of Henderson will continue to work hard every day
to provide a livable and accessible community that is welcoming to all.
