Henderson, Nev. – The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department has been named a finalist for the prestigious national Gold Medal Award. Administered by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the Gold Medal honors communities across the nation that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation management. Agencies are evaluated on their ability to meet the needs of the people they serve through the collective efforts of staff, elected officials and residents.
Henderson joins three other finalists in the Class II population category that includes communities with populations of 150,001-400,000.
“It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized as a finalist for what is known throughout the nation as the highest honor in the field of parks and recreation,” said Mayor Debra March. “We are fortunate to have one of the finest parks and recreation systems in the nation, but we continually strive to improve and find ways to better serve our residents. That is what being a premier community is all about.”
The City of Henderson has been honored to receive the Grand Plaque Award in 1999 and 2014.
Founded in 1965, the Gold Medal Awards program honors communities in the United States that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition. Applications are separated into six classes, with five classes based on population and one class for armed forces.
Agencies are judged on their ability to address the needs of those they serve through the collective energies of community members, staff members and elected officials.
A panel of five park and recreation professionals will review and judge all application materials. Judges are chosen for their considerable experience and knowledge in parks and recreation on both the local and national levels.
The six Grand Plaque recipients will be announced during the 2020 NRPA Conference, which will be held virtually in October.
Musco Lighting, LLC continues to sponsor the Gold Medal Awards program as it has for more than 20 years.
