City of Henderson is the only APWA-accredited agency in the Silver State

HENDERSON, Nev. (Nov. 5, 2025) — The City of Henderson celebrated its Public Works Department for paving the way and exceeding industry standards by receiving accreditation from the American Public Works Association (AWPA) for the third time. The City has maintained continuous accreditation since 2017.

The re-accreditation is valid for five years and is achieved by being 97% percent compliant with national management practices established by the industry. The City achieved 100% compliance with two of the department’s processes recognized as model practices that should be adopted by other agencies – one being traffic policies.

In addition to the re-accreditation, the department recently earned two Project of the Year awards from the AWPA Nevada Chapter.

The award-winning projects include:

Water Street Shade Structure - Part of the City’s ongoing revitalization of its historic downtown. This $1.57 million upgrade added two large shade canopies, new lighting and sound systems, security enhancements and drought-tolerant turf — all to improve visitor comfort and safety.

Despite active construction from July to December 2024, Water Street Plaza remained open and hosted over 63,000 attendees for major events like the Frozen live concert, Aki Matsuri Festival and Winterfest Parade. The project was completed on time, within budget and without any disruptions.

The improvements were driven by community feedback and reflect the City’s continued investment in sustainable, community-first infrastructure.

Renovation and expansion of Fire Station 95 - A modernization of one of the City’s oldest fire stations while maintaining uninterrupted emergency services. The project was honored for its innovation, sustainability and community impact.

Key upgrades included new dormitories, energy-efficient systems and a repurposed fitness center — all completed on time and within budget. The team overcame complex site challenges through creative design and close coordination, prioritizing safety, sustainability and long-term value.

These honors highlight the City of Henderson’s ongoing commitment to building strong, resilient infrastructure and recognizing the dedicated professionals who make it possible.
