The State of Nevada Approved Henderson To Become a Charter School Authorizer in May 2024

HENDERSON, Nev. (Aug. 5, 2025) – The City of Henderson approved its first charter school operator, Kesher Academy, to form a school in fall 2026 under its authority during a special City Council meeting on Aug. 5, 2025.

The City received a total of four applications from charter school operators to form schools during its first-ever application cycle this year. Applications were evaluated on several criteria including their proposed school’s enrollment, academic, operational and financial plans as well as alignment with the City’s Mission, Vision and Values. Operators whose applications were denied may revise and resubmit their applications to the City within the next 30 days. Resubmitted applications will be voted on for approval at a future City Council meeting.

“Quality Education is a strategic priority for our City, and we take an active role in supporting Henderson schools, staff and students,” said Mayor Michelle Romero. “As a Council, we feel strongly that cities should have greater control over education in their communities, and this is a major step toward that goal. We are grateful to the four applicants for their time and efforts and especially for their desire to help us offer more options for Henderson families."

Charter schools are publicly funded independent schools that operate under the terms of a charter agreement with their authorizer. Charter school authorizers are responsible for approving new schools, monitoring the performance of the school and its finances, and closing failing schools. As result of passage AB400 in the 2023 Legislative Session, Nevada cities and counties can apply to the State to become an authorizer. The City of Henderson was approved in May 2024.
