Summer Camps
When school is out for the summer, our camps are in! The City of Henderson has a variety of summer youth programs to choose from.

Summer Teen Kamp
Available June 11-Aug. 10, 2012
Ages 12-15. Registration is ongoing.

Teen Kamp is a camp for teens and preteens looking for some real excitement this summer. Each week is themed, providing an opportunity for teens to experience new recreation adventures. The program offers mentoring and leadership activities as well as opportunities to develop self-confidence and positive decision-making skills as teens take part in engaging activities and memorable field trips. Programs are supervised by staff members who understand and enjoy working with teens.

The program is held from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. weekdays and is open to teens/preteens ages 12-15.

Register
Use the activity codes below to place a deposit and hold your teen’s place in that week’s program. The balance for each week is due on the Wednesday prior to the week the teen will be attending. Register online at cityofhenderson.com/parks or at any recreation center.

You’ll be asked to complete a youth participant information form and parent agreement for your teen. Forms are available at the link above and at all recreation centers.

June 11-15 Skateboarding
Learn how to fix and maintain your skateboard and get your hands dirty by pitching in and working as a team to tear down a skateboard and then put it back together piece by piece. We’ll hit the ramps and drop into the bowls with the pros. The week concludes with a party and pro exhibition.

June 18-22 Dance
Get ready to experience a new form of dance each day. Learn how to move your body and feet to the rhythm of the music like a tapper, jazz dancer, hip hopper, and more. It’s a week packed with energy as you explore the world of dance, from the beginner to the more advanced.

June 18-22 Sports
Tired of the same old sports? Then try something new! This week you’ll discover and explore unique sports such as horseshoes and paintball and lots more. You’ll be surprised to find out how enjoyable these sports can be.

Bring your sweet tooth and learn how to make delicious fudge, truffles and candy. Have you heard of Cupcake Wars? Your team will be put to the challenge to see whose cupcakes reign supreme. Since this week involves cooking and baking, please be aware that nuts may be involved.

July 2-6 Adrenaline Junkies
If the clatter of tracks and anticipation of the free fall gets your heart pumping, and if you love an adrenaline rush and the thrill of roller coaster riding, then this week is for you. Learn about roller coasters and join us as we ride some of the Valley’s best. No Teen Kamp July 4.

Explore karate through a unique blend of traditional values and modern martial arts techniques. Learn important self-defense skills, which are essential in today’s world. Expect new challenges as you develop self-confidence and leadership skills.

Join us for a week of outdoor adventures complete with camping and hiking skills and games. Taste some Dutch-oven cooking, make your own outdoor project and work on a leather craft. You’ll also learn how to navigate a trail. Wear hiking boots or tennis shoes and bring a large bottle of water each day.

July 23-27 Amazing Race
This week offers up a twist on The Amazing Race, throwing you into a real-life puzzle that you need to find a way out of. Get ready to solve puzzles, navigate tricky challenges, and get plenty of physical activity. It’s a challenge you won’t want to miss.

July 30-Aug. 3 Media Mayhem
Explore the world of media, including television and film. Go behind the scenes at a local television news station during one field trip to get the inside scoop on how the news comes together. We’ll also go to see several fantastic movies.

Aug. 6-10 Water Wonderland
If a water wonderland sounds fun and refreshing, then spend the week with us and experience each of our pools and water features. We visit a different pool each day and take part in other water-themed activities such as building cardboard boats and racing them across the pools, having swim relays and throwing a fantastic beach party.

Teen C.H.O.I.C.E, Choosing How Our Individuality Can Excel

June 11-Aug. 10, 2012

This program is designed for preteens and teens (ages 11-14) and provides an opportunity for each person to explore and participate in hands-on activities, events and excursions while building leadership, self-esteem, confidence, positive attitude, and friendships. Teens interact with our kids camps involving culinary, art and special events as they develop life skills that can make each individual excel. Registration packets will be available at VVRC starting April 30; registration is required. For more information, call 267-4060.


Summer Fun

June 11-Aug. 10, 2012, 9:00 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday, Free

Summer Fun is a seasonal no-cost drop-in program for kids held right in their neighborhoods. They’ll experience a fun-filled summer with new and exciting activities that keep them intrigued and engaged. Activities include arts and crafts, games, sports, and special events. Kids must currently be attending or have completed grades K-8 of the current school district year. All participants will enjoy planned activities in their designated age groups, K-5 and 6-8. Register early as space is limited. There is a nominal cost for special events (schedules will be distributed at each site). The program is not offered on July 4.

A parent/guardian must complete a participant information form for each child prior to program participation. Advance registration is available at all Safekey and Teen Scene sites during program hours, as well as City of Henderson recreation centers. On-site registration is available on the program start date at the location your child will be attending. Parents must register prior to their child attending.
