Estimated completion: southern portion spring 2012
Length: 12 miles (segment through the City of Henderson)
Overview
The Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Trail is located within an existing railroad corridor and will extend for approximately 12 miles through Henderson city limits. The trail will provide a valuable connection across the city and connect to planned trails in Clark County, creating a regional trails corridor approximately 18 miles long.
To complete development of trails within this corridor, the project includes the design and construction of trails along both sides of the existing railroad tracks. It is anticipated that a large percentage of the 50,000 residents immediately adjacent to the railroad corridor will use this area for recreation and non-motorized transportation, including walking and bicycling.
History
The demand for trails has increased as the populations of Henderson and Las Vegas have substantially grown. The trails and amenities that are being constructed through this project are located within the heart of the southeastern Las Vegas Valley and provide additional recreation and travel options for residents.
The opportunity for this type of planned corridor does not exist elsewhere in the Las Vegas Valley. Obtaining lands for recreational purposes in developed urbanized areas is often difficult. Using this corridor provides an opportunity to offer recreation amenities that will benefit the entire Valley. By improving overall condition through the addition of trails and landscaping, the corridor’s current blighted state would be transformed into a positive asset in Henderson.
