Henderson To Host Come Out and Play Day Sept. 24

HENDERSON, Nev. – The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting “Come Out and Play Day” from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24 as part of National Week in Play, a program of Playful City USA. In July, the City of Henderson was named a Playful City USA for the second year in a row by KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit dedicated to bringing play back into children’s lives. Henderson is the only city in Nevada to have received this honor.

Come Out and Play Day will be held at 35 different sites around the city, including Safekey school sites and recreation centers where Kids Zone is held. Safekey is a before- and after-school program, and Kids Zone augments Safekey during weeks when school is not in session. In all, more than 400 children will participate in the same Play Day activities simultaneously.

Mayor Andy Hafen will visit children at Black Mountain Recreation Center’s Kids Zone at 3:30 p.m. and Safekey participants at Gordon McCaw Elementary School at 4:00 p.m. He will help lead Come Out and Play Day activities and meet the children.

“This is our second annual Play Day event, and the only event of its kind nationwide that includes 35 participating locations on a single day,” said Sally Ihmels, Recreation superintendent, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “Part of being a Playful City USA is recognizing and celebrating the fun and importance of play, whether it be unstructured play at our parks and playgrounds or in structured play offered at our recreation centers. Our Safekey and Kids Zone participants are looking forward to being part of this national event.”
