Free Workshops and Plant Sale Set for Sept. 12 At Acacia Demonstration Gardens

HENDERSON, Nev. – Acacia Demonstration Gardens, 50 Casa Del Fuego St., is offering free workshops on Saturday, Sept. 12 designed to promote the possibilities of backyard gardening in the desert. The workshops are sponsored by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. Registration is suggested, but drop-ins are welcome. Register at cityofhenderson.com.

In addition, the Conservation District of Southern Nevada and the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) will host a plant sale from 8:00 a.m. to noon. All of the plants were grown locally by CSN students. Patrons may purchase plants using cash and checks only.

Workshops
Backyard Wildlife Habitat (activity 144021-95) is offered from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and is open to all ages. Presented by a representative of the Conservation District of Southern Nevada, the workshop explores how to transform a backyard into a haven for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Discussion will also include edible landscapes and plants that are pleasing to the desert tortoise.

Vegetable Gardening 101 (activity 144024-95) is offered from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and is open to ages 16 and up.A master gardener will discuss vegetable gardening from raised beds and soil preparation to planting and tending. Participants will leave with the knowledge necessary to get their vegetable gardens off to a good start this fall.

Sprinkler Clock Demonstration (activity 144007-95) is offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to ages 16 and up. Members of Henderson Water Conservation will provide practical tips on how to set a home irrigation system, how to comply with assigned watering schedules, and how to check a system for possible leaks.

Acacia Demonstration Gardens is a 2.8-acre site that features 19 distinct gardens, including backyard garden demonstration areas, cactus garden, allergy-free garden, wetlands demonstration areas, animal habitat garden and a Mojave Desert garden area. It is open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight, and admission is free.
