City of Henderson To Host 2009 Holiday Decorating Contest

HENDERSON, Nev.— The Henderson Commemorative Beautification Commission (HCBC) is accepting entries for its annual holiday decorating contest now through Thursday, Nov. 19. Applications are available online at cityofhenderson.com or by calling 267-4014. Participation is free and is limited to the first 50 Henderson residents to enter.

The contest features three categories to choose from: residential using less than 1,000 lights (10 strands or less); residential using more than 1,000 lights; and group. Residents taking part in the group category must submit an entry form for each home to be considered part of the group. All entrants may also opt to be considered for one of two special awards, the Griswald and Most Innovative. The Griswald Award, which takes its name from the movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” is for homes decorated in the over-the-top style as seen in the film. Most Innovative recognizes homes decorated using technologies, methods or styles that are new, original, or have not been used in previous years.

“A tremendous amount of planning, thought and hard work goes into making these displays so impressive,” said Doug Guild, Parks operations manager, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “They demonstrate not only creativity and holiday spirit, but also the strong sense of community pride that gives Henderson its small town feel now and throughout the year.”

Members of the HCBC will judge entries on Monday, Dec. 7. Winners will be announced during the City’s annual WinterFest celebration at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water St. First and second place winners will receive engraved plaques; honorable mention winners will receive certificates.

Those wishing to see the lights displays of participating homes may register for the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department’s Holiday Lights Tour, which takes place from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18. The bus tour departs Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Dr. Participation is $5 per person and is open to all ages. Register by Dec. 12 online at cityofhenderson.com (activity 154004-36) or at any City of Henderson recreation center.
