City of Henderson Christmas Tree Recycling Program Open Dec. 26 Through Jan. 14
HENDERSON, Nev.— The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will accept Christmas trees for its holiday tree recycling program Dec. 26 through Jan. 14. Residents may drop trees off at any of six locations throughout Henderson: Acacia Park, 50 Casa Del Fuego St.; Anthem Hills Park, 2256 N. Reunion Dr.; Mission Hills Park, 551 E. Mission Dr.; Morrell Park, 500 Harris St.; Pecos Legacy Park, 150 Pecos Rd.; and Whitney Ranch Recreation Center 1575 Galleria Dr. Participation is free.
The Parks and Recreation Department recycles trees by putting them through a chipper and turning them into mulch. The mulch is used in city parks and in landscaping at municipal buildings throughout Henderson, saving money and reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills. Last year 1,734 trees were recycled through the program.
“Of all the real Christmas trees sold each year, only about 7 percent are recycled,” said Doug Guild, Park Operations manager, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “But recycling is a critical component of sustainability that anyone can do. It’s giving your holiday tree a new lease on life for the benefit of our environment and our community.”
Before dropping trees off for recycling, residents should remove all non-organic material, such as lights, wires, tinsel, nails and ornaments. These items can damage the chipper and contaminate the mulch, rendering it unusable. Flocked trees cannot be recycled.
