Summer Registration Opens for Henderson Parks and Recreation Programs
Recreation Centers See Double-Digit Increases in Participation

HENDERSON, Nev. – Online registration for the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department’s summer programs begins at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 10 for aquatics and Youth Enrichment programs, and at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 12 for most other programs. Register at cityofhenderson.com. Walk-in registration for all programs will be accepted starting May 17 at every City of Henderson recreation center, pending space availability.

A complete listing of classes, events and activities is available in Henderson Happenings, the department’s guide to parks and leisure opportunities. Copies are mailed to all Henderson homes and businesses, and the publication may be viewed online at cityofhenderson.com. Participants are encouraged to sign up early as space in many programs fills up quickly.

Overall, attendance in the City’s recreation programs has increased by 6 percent this fiscal year over 2009. However, some recreation centers have experienced double-digit increases in program attendance, including Black Mountain Recreation Center, which saw a 23 percent increase, and Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, which saw a 33 percent increase.

“Like many parks and recreation agencies throughout the country, we are experiencing a growing demand for our programs and services,” said Dominick Casey, assistant director, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “Youth programs in particular, such as Learn-to-Swim, summer Kids Zone, music lessons, and dance classes typically fill up within days or even hours after registration opens. Families have had to tighten their belts, but they still want their children to enjoy quality recreational experiences at a price they can afford.”

Casey said many parents plan ahead to be at their computers when registration opens. “They make their recreation choices when Henderson Happenings arrives in the mail or is posted online so they will be ready when registration begins. More than 90 percent of our registration is made online,” he said.
