Free College Application and Scholarship Workshop Oct. 5 and Oct. 6
HENDERSON, Nev. – The City of Henderson Blue Ribbon Commission is hosting a college application and scholarship workshop from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5 and Wednesday, Oct. 6 at Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Rd. The free workshop is sponsored by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. Parents and teens are asked to RSVP before Sept. 30 by calling 267-4016, but walk-ins are welcome if space is available. Students who RSVP before Sept. 30 will be entered into a drawing to win a prize.
Teens and parents will learn how to write a powerful resume; how to craft a cover letter that gets noticed, and how to prepare an accurate college application. Topics will also include effective scholarship search strategies and how to complete scholarship application forms. One-on-one assistance will be available.
The presenters include two members of the Blue Ribbon Commission who are dedicated to working with students. Dr. Teddy Osantowski is a published author and former college professor at Prairie State College (Illinois) and adjunct faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Johnnie Williams III is a nationally recognized youth activist, author and motivational speaker.
“Today, more than ever, teens and their parents need to know how to navigate the college application and scholarship process,” said Kurt Williams, Recreation Services manager, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “With everyone’s budget being so tight these days, families must take advantage of every available resource, and that’s what this workshop is designed to help them do.”
