Henderson, Nev. – An 82-year-old man struck by a vehicle while riding a motor scooter on Thursday, May 15, has died.
Gordon Bennett was driving a 2010 Honda Elite motor scooter southbound on Boulder Highway at Greenway Road at about 10:30 a.m. He attempted to make a lane change to the left but the adjacent lane was occupied, so came back into the original lane, striking the driver’s side of a 2011 Toyota Camry that was attempting to pass. The motor scooter went down and Bennett was separated from the scooter.
Bennett was transported to Sunrise Hospital Trauma Center where he was listed in critical but stable condition. Henderson Police were notified about 6 a.m. today that Bennett died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
The 65-year-old female Toyota driver was uninjured. She voluntarily submitted to blood testing, but did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A preliminary investigation indicates that speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
In 2013, 267 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes on Nevada roadways. So far this year, 81 people have died in traffic-related fatalities statewide with 47 of those deaths occurring in Clark County. This is the fourth traffic-related fatality in Henderson this year.
