Residents Invited to Be Part of a Guinness World Record Attempt For the Largest Swimming Lesson

May 13, 2014

Henderson, Nev. Henderson residents are invited to take part in a Guinness World Record attempt for the world’s largest swimming lesson from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, June 20. The free event is being held at Black Mountain Aquatic Complex, 599 Greenway Rd.; Henderson Multigenerational Activity and Indoor Pools, 250 S. Green Valley Pkwy.; Heritage Park Aquatic Complex, 310 S. Racetrack Rd.; and Whitney Ranch Activity and Indoor Pools, 1575 C Galleria Dr.

Participation is open to people of all ages. Early registration is recommended and may be made at any recreation center or indoor pool or online at

The purpose of the event is to draw attention to the importance of water safety and teach children how to swim. It also serves as an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest swimming lesson. An estimated 25,000 people around the world on five continents will simultaneously be taking part.

“Besides adult supervision, the most important way to keep a child safe in and around the water is to ensure they learn how to swim,” said Mayor Andy Hafen. “We know that children who have not learned how to swim by the time they reach third grade likely will never learn. This unique event provides an opportunity to introduce the city’s American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program and give parents a preview of what it’s about.”

Mayor Hafen added that parents taking part in the event will receive a certificate valid for free swim lessons for a child ages 6 months to 4 years. Funding for the free swim lessons is provided through a grant from the Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council.
