Judge Hedger and Henderson Municipal Court Celebrate 10th Anniversary of the Legal Minds Program

January 30, 2014

Henderson, Nev. – The Legal Minds program has been introducing Henderson fifth graders to life at the Henderson Municipal Court since it was launched in January of 2004. After 10 years, almost 5,000 students have visited with the program’s creator, Judge Douglas Hedger, toured the courthouse, observed court proceedings, and learned about court operations and personnel.
Judge Hedger developed the Legal Minds program to offer students a positive, firsthand glimpse into the legal system. Participants watch real life court proceedings, engage in a question and answer session with the judge, and hear from different court staff about their respective job responsibilities.

Students participating in the program frequently write letters to Judge Hedger about their experiences. Many have expressed interest in a career in the legal profession. Others say that what they learned helps them make a conscious decision to avoid breaking the law and returning to court.

“I am thrilled with the response we have received from Henderson schools,” says Judge Hedger. “This year, the 10th anniversary of the program’s inception, we should surpass a combined total of 5,000 students who have participated in the program. That number represents a lot of young people who have received a positive learning experience to help them make good decisions about their future.”
Henderson schools interested in participating in the Legal Minds program may contact the Henderson Municipal Court at (702) 267-3354.
