Henderson, NV – The city of Henderson observes Municipal Clerks Week May 4-10, 2014, to help increase the public’s awareness of municipal clerks and the vital services they provide for local government and the community.
Municipal or city clerks serve as the professional link between the citizens, the local governing bodies and agencies of government at other levels. Their main functions are to serve as the city election administrator, facilitate a transparent legislative process, keep the corporate seal, and serve as the city’s official record keeper. Other duties include keeping an accurate record of all ordinances, resolutions, bylaws, and proceedings of the city council and advisory boards and commissions, preparing agendas, and preserving the city’s historical archives.
“One of our most important responsibilities is to ensure all city boards and commissions comply with the open meeting law,” said Henderson City Clerk Sabrina Mercadante. “We also interact every day with people who have business with the city, as well as serving the mayor, city council, and all administrative departments.”
Municipal Clerks Week was initiated in 1969 by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) and is endorsed by all of its members throughout the United States, Canada and 15 other countries. IIMC President Marc Lemoine, MMC, Deputy City Clerk for the city of Winnipeg, Canada, urges municipal and deputy clerks to highlight the importance of their roles and functions and the impact the Municipal Clerk's office has on the public.
"There are many responsibilities of the municipal and deputy clerk that the public takes for granted, such as keeping the council advised of legislation that affects them," said Lemoine. "Yet, if clerks are inattentive in their duties, then the efficient operation of our local government is greatly affected.”
Sabrina Mercadante has served as city clerk for the city of Henderson since September 2010 and has been a member of IIMC since 2003. Additionally, Mercandante serves on the board of directors for Clark County Credit Union and S.A.F.E. House and is a founding board member of the Basic High School Alumni Foundation.
