Henderson, Nev. – The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, 350 E. Galleria Dr., is hosting its annual Birding Celebration from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 26. Admission is free. The event incorporates Earth Day and International Migratory Bird Day into a single celebration.
Earth Day is designed to foster global support for environmental programs. International Migratory Bird Day is recognized by avid birders in North America, Central America and South America. Its purpose is to highlight the migratory journey of more than 350 species of birds.
The Birding Celebration features birding walks, guided tours and eco-friendly activities for all ages. Visitors can explore the 140-acre preserve and the many birds that can be seen there, including resident and migratory birds.
The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve is located along the Pacific Flyway, which is a major north-south travel route for many species of migratory birds. The flyway spans northern Alaska to South America, and includes hundreds of important feeding, breeding and resting sites for various species of birds.
The preserve provides habitat for a variety of desert and resident bird species, including verdin, Abert’s towhee, Gambel’s quail and the greater roadrunner. A variety of raptors may also be seen at the preserve, including the peregrine falcon, Cooper’s hawk and sharpshinned hawk.
