Henderson, Nev. – The city of Henderson’s Alternative Sentencing Work Program is improving the community one block wall at a time this summer.

The Alternative Sentencing Division’s Work Program Unit will be painting the block wall on the west side of North Valle Verde Drive from High View Drive to Marlboro Drive over the next several weeks. For participants’ safety, the work necessitates the closure of the adjacent roadway travel lane but will be performed on weekends when traffic volumes are at their lowest.

Later this summer, the painting work will shift to the block wall along the west side of North Green Valley Parkway from High View Drive to just north of Warm Springs Road.

The Work Program Unit is providing labor for the block wall painting project at no cost to the city and will significantly improve the aesthetic appeal of these mature Henderson neighborhoods.

“Defendants sentenced to the Work Program are giving back to the community in ways that have a more positive impact than simply paying a court fine,” said Acting Alternative Sentencing Chief Ian Massy. “All of the labor provided through the program directly benefits Henderson residents at no cost to the city.”

Alternative Sentencing’s Work Program was launched in November 2009 as an alternative for Henderson Municipal Court defendants who can’t afford their fines or who qualify for community service in lieu of jail time. Participants provide labor for projects like trail and park cleanup, elimination of graffiti, removal of debris from flood channels, trash cleanup after events, and abatement of vacant abandoned and foreclosed homes.
