Henderson, Nev. – A 16-year-old suspect accused of killing his mother and 9-year-old brother was taken into custody Wednesday morning by Henderson Police detectives.

Adrian Navarro-Canales was found sitting in a food court near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Detectives located him and took him into custody without incident.

Henderson Police received a tip that Navarro-Canales was in the area of the food court Tuesday night. Detectives following up on the information found him sitting by himself.

Navarro-Canales was booked into the juvenile holding area of the Clark County Detention Center; however, he is charged as an adult with two counts of murder.

Navarro-Canales is accused of the stabbing death of his mother, Elvira Canales-Gomez, 40, and his 9-year-old brother, Cesar Navarro. Police had been searching for Navarro-Canales since his mother and brother were found slain about noon on Friday.

When the woman and her young son were found in the apartment, detectives thought the older son might also have been a victim. As the investigation progressed, Navarro-Canales went from a missing person to a person of interest. By Sunday, detectives had the probable cause to arrest Navarro-Canales in connection with his family’s murder.

Detectives believe Navarro-Canales left the apartment on September 18 and walked to the Strip. While it was suspected that he may have returned to the apartment sometime after his family was discovered, detectives have found no evidence that he returned to the apartment.

Officers were called Friday to the apartment in the 11000 block of S. Eastern Avenue near Sunridge Heights Parkway to check on the welfare of the woman and her children. A friend and a relative started to worry about the woman after she was not returning calls. Detectives discovered that the younger boy also missed school last week starting on Wednesday. Navarro-Canales was not enrolled in school this year.
