Henderson, Nev. – Two suspects are in custody in connection with a January shooting in the parking lot of a Henderson mall that appears to have stemmed from an ongoing feud between rival gang members.
Ellis A. Banks, 26, of Las Vegas was arrested Thursday on attempted murder charges, discharging a gun into an occupied vehicle and possession of a gun by a convicted felon. Marquell D. Scott, 28, of Las Vegas, was arrested on July 24 on the same charges.
Banks and Scott are accused of firing 12 shots at 23-year-old Lionel Bowen of Las Vegas as he ran from them in the parking lot of the Galleria at Sunset mall about 9:40 a.m. January 26. Bowen was struck once in the arm with other bullets hitting nearby parked cars.
Detectives believe Banks and Scott saw Bowen inside the mall on January 26 and followed him outside. Once in the parking lot, the suspects fired at Bowen.
During the course of the investigation, a search warrant was served at Scott’s mother’s house, where a handgun was located. That handgun was determined through forensic testing to be a match for the shell casings found at the scene of the shooting.
Since the shooting is believed to be motivated by the suspects’ gang affiliations, the suspects face a criminal gang enhancement on the attempted murder charges.
Banks is currently being held without bail in the Henderson Detention Center and Scott is being held in the Clark County Detention Center.
Henderson Police were assisted in this investigation by the FBI Safe Streets Taskforce and Metro Gang Crimes Bureau, comprised of Metro Police, North Las Vegas Police and Nevada Parole and Probation officers. Both suspects were taken into custody by the FBI Criminal Apprehension Team, comprised of FBI agents, Henderson Police detectives and Metro Police detectives.
