Henderson, Nev. – KaBoom!, a national nonprofit dedicated to saving children’s play, has named the City of Henderson a Playful City USA Community for the sixth time. Henderson is the only community in Nevada to earn this national designation. Sponsored by the Humana Foundation, Playful City USA is a national program that celebrates and promotes local policies that increase play opportunities for children.
This year’s 217 Playful City USA honorees hail from 43 states and range in size from major cities like San Francisco to small towns like Ellsworth, Kansas (population 3,100). To be considered for the Playful City USA designation, communities must demonstrate a commitment to play and physical activity by developing unique local action plans to increase the quantity and quality of play in their community.
According to KaBoom!, Henderson was recognized for its outstanding dedication to play. As part of its initiative to keep children healthy, the city’s Youth Enrichment Fitness Program, offered after school at all Henderson Safekey sites, encourages children to discover and embrace the joy of physical fitness and activity and helps to children to stay active while burning calories at the same time.
“I’ve often said that a key component of becoming America’s premier community is working to become America’s healthiest community,” said Mayor Andy Hafen. “We remain committed to providing opportunities for children in our community to get and stay active and fit, whether through structured programs like the Youth Enrichment Fitness Program or through unstructured play at our 56 parks. We want our children to be healthy and enjoy an outstanding quality of life.”
