City of Henderson Adds Two Electric Vehicles to Fleet
Cars expected to save $9,700 each in fuel costs over five years

May 21, 2013

Henderson, Nev. The city of Henderson has purchased two electric vehicles to meet the growing demands of its employee motor pool. With 95 percent of the city’s non-emergency fleet already operating on alternative fuels, the new Ford Focus and Chevy Volt will continue the city’s efforts to be fiscally sustainable and mindful of our impact on the environment.

The Ford Focus is powered exclusively by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery system that will never require gas or an oil change. The Chevy Volt is also battery-powered but can be recharged by a gas motor for extended driving range. The cars recharge in about four hours using less than $2 in electricity from a 120-volt household outlet and have a mileage rating equivalent to more than 100 MPG. The cars are expected to save $9,700 each in fuel costs over the next five years.

“One of the guiding principles in our strategic plan’s goal to promote sustainable practices is to lead by example,” explained Mayor Andy Hafen. “These electric vehicles offer advanced technology while significantly reducing our carbon footprint.”

Workforce reductions and the motor pool have allowed the city to reduce its fleet by 120 vehicles since 2009. The city’s motor pool was created in April 2010 to cut fleet costs and increase efficiency by rotating vehicles to employees throughout the work day. Demand for motor pool vehicles has more than tripled since then, dictating the addition of two new vehicles to the original pool of six.
