Henderson, Nev. – As people prepare for Super Bowl parties, Henderson Police want to remind everyone to have a game plan of their own by having a designated sober driver for the ride home.

Otherwise, drunk drivers will be faced by saturation patrols of Henderson Police traffic officers, who will be Joining Forces with officers from Boulder City Police, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, Nevada Highway Patrol and North Las Vegas Police looking for drunk drivers. Officers will be out for extra patrols in Henderson during the Super Bowl weekend.

Henderson Traffic officers also will assist Las Vegas Metropolitan Police for an announced DUI checkpoint on Sunday in Las Vegas.

Sober drivers and alternate ways home need to be planned before kickoff. If you are hosting a Super Bowl party please make sure that all of your guests have arranged for a ride home with a sober driver. Also determine before the game starts when you’ll stop serving alcoholic drinks, such as the end of the third quarter, which is when NFL stadiums halt beer sales. Also make sure that all the people who are drinking at your party are 21 years old or older.

Last year, there were three fatal accidents in Nevada the weekend of the Super Bowl with one fatal accident on Super Bowl Sunday. The fatal accident on Super Bowl Sunday occurred in Clark County. In 2011, 245 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes on Nevada roadways. Alcohol was a contributing factor in 74 of those deaths, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety – Office of Traffic Safety.

The Henderson Police Traffic Unit received funding from the Department of Public Safety - Office of Traffic Safety, as part of the Joining Forces Grant. The grant provides funding for enforcement and education to reduce deaths and injuries on Nevada roadways. The grant will assist in funding special enforcement details throughout the year targeting seat belt usage, DUIs, pedestrian safety and speeding violations.
