HENDERSON, Nev.— Bird lovers and outdoor enthusiasts willing to share a few hours of their time each month are invited to be a part of the new Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve Volunteer Program. Volunteers will play an important role in the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department’s efforts to educate the community about birds, conservation and stewardship.
The purpose of the program is to provide an enhanced visitor experience by having knowledgeable volunteers at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve to provide field-specific information, which increases visitors’ opportunities for learning, interaction and input. In return, volunteers enjoy unique experiences and deepen their environmental awareness.
“Volunteers have always played an active role in Parks and Recreation, whether it is serving meals to seniors, mentoring children as a volunteer sports coach, or being a positive presence on Henderson trails through our Trail Watch program,” said Jennifer Magby, Outdoor Recreation coordinator, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve Volunteer Program will provide similar opportunities for those with an interest wildlife and conservation.”
Volunteers will greet visitors and introduce them to the Bird Viewing Preserve, help staff identify bird species, assist with programs and events, and provide information on bird activity and sightings. Prospective volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and complete a City of Henderson volunteer services application. All applications are submitted for mandatory background checks, which are paid for by the City of Henderson. Those chosen to participate in the program will receive on-site training. Prior birding experience is welcome, but not necessary.
