Henderson, Nev. – Charlene Ham, special events coordinator for the City of Henderson Department of Cultural Arts & Tourism, was one of six selected from a group of tourism professionals and volunteers from around the state to receive the VolunTourism Award for excellence in tourism promotion in their respected territories at the 22nd annual Rural Roundup Conference hosted by the Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT).

“NCOT is very grateful to our dedicated tourism professionals for their volunteer work helping to support and enhance Nevada’s #1 industry,” said Brian Krolicki, Lieutenant Governor and NCOT chairman. “Tourism is vital to the economy in rural Nevada and NCOT relies on our volunteer network to keep visitor dollars flowing into local events, parks, museums and a wealth of other attractions.”

Representing the Las Vegas Territory, Ham was chosen for her dedication and profound commitment to volunteerism and devoted endorsement of such cities as Henderson and Las Vegas. She has served on the territory’s board for more than a decade, making a significant impact to the local tourism industry, as well as educational advancement opportunities for local students, through her involvement in the organization’s college scholarship program. With her leadership, the program has grown tremendously and now the Las Vegas chapter awards up to three scholarships each year to high school and college students pursuing a degree in the hospitality field.

Her passion for the industry continues into her professional career. Ham has been working as a special events coordinator for Henderson’s Department of Cultural Arts & Tourism for the past 11 years. She is responsible for assisting in the execution of a number of tourism-based programs and events, including some of the nation’s largest celebrations, region’s top races, as well as several world championship competitions. Such events include the Ironman World Championship 70.3, ITU Long Course Triathlon World Championships, Super Run Classic Car Show and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival.

“We are very proud of Charlene,” said Andrea Primo, Director of the Department of Cultural Arts & Tourism. “She is the perfect example of a tourism advocate for our region. Her expertise and enthusiasm is not only valuable, but also transcends to the visitors’ experience in our premier city. She is without a doubt one of the most deserving recipients of this prestigious award.”
