Henderson, Nev. – The Henderson community will come together for a historic celebration, honoring the city’s 59th anniversary during the Heritage Parade & Festival. The tribute, which features traditions like breakfast with city council, a parade, hours of live entertainment and a classic car show, will be held on Saturday, April 21 from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, in the Water Street District. Admission is complimentary.
“This event is dear to the hearts of all our citizens,” said Mark Calhoun, Henderson City Manager. “It’s a day for everyone to join together as a community to honor Henderson’s legacy, its past, present and future, and celebrate everything that makes our city premier and a place to call home.”
Below is a schedule of events for the Heritage Parade & Festival. All activities, times, locations are subject to change.
City Council Breakfast - 8 a.m.–9 a.m. - Henderson Convention Center Lawn
Mayor Hafen and fellow council members will kick off the day’s festivities, serving up a delicious breakfast to residents.
Parade - 10 a.m. - Water Street District
As one of the oldest traditions in Henderson, the parade will feature a grand procession of unique entries, from floats to youth groups, hometown businesses and automobiles. Each will be decorated to the theme, “Magnesium to Magnificent,” a play on Henderson’s rich history, from its beginnings as small industrial town supplying magnesium to the U.S. War Department during World War II to its official incorporation in 1953 and as it stands today, a vision to be America’s premier community.
All parade entries will be judged based on three categories: Incorporation of Theme, Creativity and Overall Appeal. Cash prizes will be awarded to floats for 1st ($1,000), 2nd ($750) and 3rd ($500) place, as well as $500 for the People’s Choice Award, which will be voted on by the public, via text message. All other categories will receive ribbons. Parade applications are still available at HendersonLive.com.
Heritage Festival - 11 a.m.–7 p.m. - Henderson Events Plaza
Following the parade, families will have the opportunity to travel around the globe, experiencing a variety of world cultures, representing such continents as Europe, South America, Asia and more, all courtesy of the International Food & Folklife Association.
While attending the festival, they will have the chance to taste a variety of cuisine, indigenous to a specific country, including delicacies from such countries as Romania, Peru and Malaysia, as well as enjoy a mixture of diverse entertainment, from belly dancing to martial arts. Other activities include craft demonstrations, food exhibitions and international games.
Heritage Classic Car Show - 12 p.m.–6 p.m. - Water Street District
The classic car show will showcase a few hundred hot rods, chronicling the vintage appeal of decades-gone-by. Fans will see many popular vehicles on display, including some from such big-time automakers as Dodge, Chevrolet, Ford, Plymouth and more. Trophies and awards will be given to car show participants in several different categories.
