Henderson, Nev. – Henderson City Manager Mary Kay Peck has named Bristol S. Ellington as Assistant City Manager. Ellington most recently served as Henderson's Director of Community Development since 2005. He first joined the city of Henderson in 1996 as Assistant Director of Community Development managing the activities of the Community Development department's Current Planning and Long Range Planning divisions. He fills the position vacancy resulting from Peck's appointment as Henderson City Manager. Ellington's first official day as Assistant City Manager is November 5 and he will receive an annual salary of $177,754.

"In his roles as Assistant Director and Director of Community Development, Bristol has been integrally involved in how Henderson has developed over the past 10 years," said Henderson Mayor James B. Gibson. "Bristol has done a great job for Henderson in his previous capacities and we are confident he will do an equally fine job as the new assistant city manager. His expertise and experiences in city government will be of great value to the City and to all those he works with in his new position."

As Director of Community Development, Ellington supervised a 53-person department as well as represented the City on local, regional, and state planning issues. Under his leadership, the city of Henderson became the first in the state of Nevada to adopt an award-winning open space and trails plan that was recognized by both the Nevada and Colorado state chapters of the American Planning Association. In addition, he championed the adoption of the Desert Edge regulations and design standards that identify and protect open space for generations of Henderson residents.

"I have been fortunate to work closely with Bristol since 1996," said City Manager Mary Kay Peck. "He is an esteemed leader and held in high regard throughout the planning profession and the city organization. I place great confidence in him bringing the same level of leadership and professionalism to his new position."

Recognizing the importance of quality development, he has led the efforts in updating the city's Development Code in order to implement the Comprehensive Plan. The City took an inventive approach to the Comprehensive Plan by establishing policies that would guide growth for the next two decades. The Plan identified five main themes important to Henderson residents including: promoting quality development; establishing balanced land uses; ensuring we create connected places; developing an integrated desert environment; and promoting opportunities for arts and culture.

Ellington and his staff are also currently working with the Bureau of Land Management to identify innovative ways to dispose of federal lands by establishing the preservation of open space and natural drainage corridors as a priority.

"This is a tremendous opportunity and I appreciate the confidence that the City Manager has in me," stated Ellington. "The city of Henderson is known throughout the nation for its innovation and cutting edge approach. I've brought that to the planning and development aspect of our organization and look forward to doing the same as assistant city manager."

A resident of Florida before moving to Henderson, Ellington served as the Principal Planner in the Current Planning division for the City of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, from 1988 to 1996. He has a master's degree in Urban Planning from the University of Michigan and a bachelor's degree in Geography from the University of Wisconsin. In addition, he is currently working towards completing a master's in Public Administration at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Ellington is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and the American Planning Association. A member of the Board of Directors since 2003, he currently serves as president of S.A.F.E. House, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to providing aid and shelter to victims of domestic abuse in Henderson.
