Henderson, Nev. – In a continuing effort to help protect all of our families, the City of Henderson Chief of Police Alan Kerstein urges all residents to visit the City’s new Sex Offender Registry. The site was opened to the public Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at 10 a.m.
The easy-to-use website offers searches of addresses, schools, parks and other areas within the City of Henderson to see the general location of the convicted sex offenders’ residences within our community. The City of Henderson Police Department’s Sex Offender Unit teamed with the City of Henderson Information Technology Department about a year ago to undertake this project.
"The more information people have about sex offenders, the less likely they are to become victims. An informed community is a safer community,"’ Chief Kerstein said. "This website gives people the information to take precautions to protect themselves and their children."
The Henderson Police Department has created this site in accordance with the requirements of Nevada State Law (NRS 179B and NRS 179D). This site lists convicted sex offenders who have been released from prison and live, work or frequent the City of Henderson, and have been designated by the State Sex Offender Registry as Tier 3, Tier 2 or Tier 1.
"Our goal with the Sex Offender Website is not to scare people, but to provide them with information so they can protect themselves,’’ Mayor James Gibson said. "The City of Henderson has always been on the forefront of technology and service to its citizens and the Sex Offender Website is another example of our forward thinking."
There are 313 registered sex offenders living in Henderson with six of those offenders designated as Tier 3. In the state, there are about 4,000 registered sex offenders with 65 of those designated as Tier 3.
The City used an outside company to assist in creating the site, specifically for the company’s expertise in web-based mapping applications creating the maps showing the general locations of the offenders. The total expenditure on the Sex Offender Registry was $39,000.
While the internet is a great tool for the community to become informed about sex offenders, the Police Department reminds users that this site should not be used to harass or threaten. Any misuse of this information or criminal activity directed against an offender may result in criminal prosecution and/or civil action.
We anticipate a surge in traffic on the day of the launch and users may experience a delay in accessing the application. They may also experience slowness within the application; however, the traffic should dwindle after the initial release.
