The City of Henderson Fire Department collected $28,028.93 in 2011 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's 50th annual Boot Drive, the first year the Boot Drive was moved to storefronts instead of busy intersections. The event is held over Labor Day weekend. With the City's support and the dedication of its firefighters, contributions have totaled approximately $600,000 over the past eight years in Henderson alone.
Along with the boot drive, each year an MDA summer camp is held at Lake Tahoe. Many of our firefighters use their vacation time to attend this camp and assist in any way they are needed. This may include a one-on-one pairing with a child. Some children with certain types of muscular dystrophy must be turned every hour during the night in which case, the firefighter assigned to this child takes on a considerable task.
We are very proud of our firefighters and overwhelmed by the support received from our citizens and City Administration. We are dedicated to finding a cure for this disease and will not stop until our job is done.
From 1961 to the present, Southern Nevada Firefighters have raised approximately $5,735,270 to help find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy.
