EXPLORER POST #2405
The Henderson Fire Department Explorer Post #2405 recently
celebrated its 20th anniversary. The Post has become an integral part of the
Henderson Fire Department
The main focus of the Post has been to educate young adults, ages 15 to 21,
about careers in the fire service and in the medical field. Explorers meet every
week to study fire and EMS-related topics. The Post studies "The Firefighters
Handbook, Essentials of Firefighting and Emergency Response" by Delmar Learning.
The young adults spend half of their time in the classroom and half of their
time on the drill ground. Classes are held every Thursday from 1630 to 2130
(4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.) at Fire Station 82. Fire Station 82 is located at 401
Parkson Road.
Explorers 18 years of age or older, with a minimum of six months of experience,
are eligible to participate in the Ride-Along Program. This program provides
young men and women the opportunity to respond with the fire crews to various
emergency scenes. Explorers ride along to observe the work of the firefighters
and paramedics as they carry out their daily tasks. Explorers are allowed to
assist in non-emergency fire ground duties. Those Explorers that have an EMT
certificate through Clark County Health District are allowed to assist in
providing medical aid to sick or injured patients. Explorers assist in
performing CPR, oxygen administration, taking vital signs, and preparing
patients for transport.
Explorers 15-17 years of age after sixth meeting may participate in are job
shadow program. This program provides men and woman the opportunity to shadow a
student assistant with the daily task of the logistic and administrative side of
the fire department which is vital to the day to day operations to the Henderson
Fire Department.
The goal of our Explorer Post is to help young adults gain self-confidence and
sharpen skills that will help them succeed in life. The Post emphasizes the
importance of education and career development. The Henderson Fire Department
Explorer Post has served as a launching pad for several Explorers who have found
success with the Henderson Fire Department, Bureau of Land Management Fire
Department, Boulder City Fire Department, Nevada Division of Forestry Fire
Department, Las Vegas Fire Department, Clark County Fire Department, North Las
Vegas Fire Department, Several former Explorers are currently working as
firefighters, EMT's, and Paramedics in Southern Nevada.
To succeed as an Explorer, a young man or woman must be willing to study,
work hard, pay attention, attend regularly, and maintain a professional
appearance.
