Signs and Symptoms of Heart Attacks:
- Chest discomfort or pain, uncomfortable pressure, squeezing,
fullness, or pain in the center of the chest that can be mild or strong.
- This discomfort or pain can last for more than a few minutes or go away
and come back.
- Upper body discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck,
jaw, or stomach.
- Shortness of breath may occur with or before chest
discomfort.
- Other signs include nausea (feeling sick to your stomach),
vomiting, lightheadedness, or fainting, or breaking out in a cold sweat.
*These symptoms are typical for both men and women, but women may also exhibit:
- Anxiety, dizziness, trouble sleeping
- Extreme fatigue, weakness
- Trouble breathing
- Upset stomach
*If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms and they do not go
away for several
minutes, call 911!
Risk Factors for Heart Attacks:
- Smoking
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Obesity
- Physical Inactivity
- Diabetes
- Are over the age of 45 (men) 55 (women)
- Family history of heart disease
Lifestyle Modifications:
- Lose weight
- Exercise - 20 minutes a day 4-5 times a week can significantly cut your
risk of having a heart attack.
- Low-fat diet high in fruits and vegetables
- Decrease red meat intake, increase lean meats such as fish and chicken
- Manage health conditions that contribute to heart attacks
