You can block mature or age-restricted content on YouTube by scrolling to the bottom of any YouTube page and turning “Restricted Mode” to “On.” Restricted mode will only apply to your current browser. How do I get family-friendly results from Google search?

From your computer, you can enable Google SafeSearch by visiting the Search Settings page. What if my child is being bullied or harassed on Facebook?

Facebook offers tools to help deal with bullying and harassment. Depending on the severity, users have the option to:
  • Unfriend the person
  • Block the person
  • Report the person to Facebook
Facebook also has a “Bullying Prevention Hub” that provides tools, tips and programs that help people using their site stand up for themselves and others. The hub has sections for both teens and parents.

Can my child have a social media account before the age of 13?

Most social media websites and apps require users be 13 to register. When determining the age qualification for an app or social media site, it is a good idea to double check your findings. Sometimes there are age qualification discrepancies between the app stores and the Terms of Use Policy on the social media or app website. When in doubt go with the app’s Terms of Use policy for the appropriate user age.

How can I report inappropriate behavior on social media sites?

You can search on the social site or app for help on reporting content. Most have a “Help Center” or “Safety Page.” In addition, most apps and social media sites have guides for parents. These guides can help parents better understand their services and provide detailed information on how to report inappropriate behavior.

At what age should I give my child a cell phone?

According to FOSI’s latest research, the average age parents say their child got his or her own smartphone was between the ages of 11 and 12. Fifty-one percent of parents said their child got a smartphone when he or she was younger than 12. Make a decision that works best for your family, taking into consideration how responsible your child is and the expectations for phone use.

What parental controls software do you recommend?

There are a number of parental control software programs on the market today. Make certain that you do your research to determine the program that best meets the needs of your family – here are items to consider:
  • Filtering and blocking capabilities
  • Ability to record use
  • Ease of installation and use
  • Compatibility with different devices and monitoring systems
