Professional Biography:
Chief Doug Stevens was selected as the eighth city of Henderson Fire Chief in January 2008. Starting as a firefighter with the City in July 1990, he was promoted within the ranks to Fire Engineer in July 1994, Fire Captain in June 1998, and Deputy Fire Chief in April 2003. As Deputy Fire Chief, his responsibilities included budget and strategic planning and supervision over the Emergency Services Division, Fire Training Division, Logistics Division, Special Operations Division, and Fire Investigations. Among his goals as Fire Chief, Chief Stevens will focus on maintaining a commitment to operational effectiveness, providing excellent customer service, and ensuring the safety of the public and fire employees.
A lifelong resident of Southern Nevada, Chief Stevens graduated from Western High School in 1987 and attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on an academic scholarship from 1987 to 1990. He graduated from the College of Southern Nevada (CSN), with two associate's degrees: one in Fire Science Technology–Urban Fire Fighting and one in Fire Science Management. He is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration from Western Oregon University through a program developed by the National Fire Academy and the Federal Emergency Management Agency and recently completed all required upper division Fire Administration courses.
Chief Stevens founded the Henderson Fire Department Explorer Post in April 1991 and served as Lead Advisor for five years. A cooperative effort between the Henderson Fire Department and the Boy Scouts of America, the Post educates young men and women about the fire service with an emphasis on career development. The program has proven to be a tremendous success. Over the years, several of the young adults have obtained careers in Southern Nevada fire service (Henderson, Clark County, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Boulder City Fire Departments).
Chief Stevens served as an officer of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), Local 1883 for seven years. He served as an Executive Board member for one year, Treasurer for two years, and President for four years.
