The United States Supreme Court has ruled that if a person is in jeopardy of going to jail for six months or less and/or a fine of $1,000 or less, they are not entitled to a jury trial. All misdemeanors in Nevada have a maximum penalty of six months in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000. Consequently, people charged with misdemeanors are not entitled to a jury trial and the trial is held before a judge.
