The City Attorney is the legal adviser of the City Council and all officers of the City in matters respecting the affairs of the City. The Civil division provides legal guidance and support for elected officials, City departments, and boards and commissions as they conduct the business of the City. The department represents the City before judicial and administrative agencies in civil litigation proceedings; handles forfeiture legal proceedings; furnishes legal advice and opinions; drafts and reviews contracts and other legal documents; initiates legal action; interprets law.
The Civil Division handles the forfeiture legal proceedings with regard to drug and felony cases, which is an action against seized property that constitutes (1) the proceeds of criminal conduct; (2) property obtained by criminal proceeds; or (3) property used as an instrumentality of a crime.
