Only the American Red Cross offers comprehensive course levels that teach participants how to swim skillfully and safely. Instructors are thoroughly trained Red Cross water safety instructors, so swimmers of all ages and abilities are in good hands. Participants learn a variety of strokes, including the front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly. They are also introduced to a wide range of personal safety skills and diving techniques. We incorporate the American Red Cross WHALE (water habits are learned early) Tales safety program as part of our Learn-to-Swim curriculum. Students and parents are invited to participate. Topics include CPR/ rescue breathing demonstrations and safety practices in, on and around the water. Courses are enjoyable and interactive with hands-on training. Advanced-level classes help students refine their skills, learn the basics of springboard diving and discover how to incorporate swimming into a life fitness plan. Participants who demonstrate all required skills for course completion receive a certificate of achievement (not a guarantee of enrollment and/or level placement). Level placement is at the discretion of staff and students may be required to repeat levels, even after a completion card has been issued. In addition to the six levels, the Parent N Me program teaches children to explore the water accompanied by a parent/guardian. Preschool Aquatics promotes the developmentally appropriate learning of fundamental water safety and aquatics skills. Parent N Me and Preschool Aquatics classes are 30 minutes in length. Level 1-6 classes are 40 minutes in length. All refund policies apply. Parent N Me The program builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water. Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, and underwater exploration. Once children can perform basic skills independently with parental assistance, they may begin the next level. 6 mos.-3 yrs. Parent N Me 2 (HMIP & WRIP only) This program enhances swimming readiness by preparing toddlers for preschool aquatics. Basic swimming skills are emphasized through several guided practice sessions that are done independently with parental assistance. Children may begin this class after successful completion of Parent N Me. 2-3 yrs. 58 HENDERSONHAPPENINGS | Spring 2016 | April-May Preschool Aquatics This program orients preschool-age children to the aquatic environment and helps them acquire basic aquatic skills. 3-5 yrs.
