If you need assistance in making recreation and leisure choices or exploring new and different possibilities, an intake interview may be appropriate. Our staff identifies an individual’s needs, strengths and interests and helps in pinpointing programs that match the individual’s abilities and interests. Here’s how to get included: • Register for the recreation program of your choice. If the participant has a special need or disability that requires special accommodations, please contact Therapeutic Recreation & Inclusion Services. • Contact the Recreation Services supervisor at least two weeks before the start date to discuss the details or features of the program. • The Recreation Services supervisor contacts Therapeutic Recreation & Inclusion Services (if necessary) to discuss the type of support needed to accommodate you or your family member. • Therapeutic Recreation & Inclusion Services works cooperatively with the family to determine which accommodations best support the individual. • You or your family member start the program with inclusion support(s) in place. • Our staff members periodically observe the program to provide assistance and answer any questions. • Communication between Therapeutic Recreation & Inclusion Services staff, Recreation staff and the individual and/or family is maintained continuously throughout the cooperative inclusion process. Platinum Rec & Roll This after-school recreation program for young adults with disabilities provides opportunities to explore their recreational interests in a structured environment as well as to develop the skills needed for independence. Daily activities focus on community-based recreation activities such as bowling, swimming and going to the movies. The program also provides activities that enhance skills related to independent living, including budgeting, meal planning, personal hygiene, social interaction, and the importance of making time for leisure experiences. It provides participants the opportunity to experience and develop a variety of lifetime leisure skills in a community-based setting and is structured to encourage the familiarization of neighborhood leisure resources, self-image, community belonging, and responsibility through recreation participation. This is an event for families who have someone with a disability. Non-siblings may attend and parents are required to accompany their child(ren). Each person must register to ensure bus space is available. Price includes staffing and round-trip transportation starting at HMGC. Bring money for rides and anything you wish to purchase. Registration deadline is Oct. 21. You can also learn about our upcoming programs and events specifically designed for individuals with disabilities. Those requiring a life jacket must have an adult with them in the water at all times. Adaptive life jackets and lift access are available. A parent/guardian must attend. Holiday Lights Tour Take in the holiday lights and decorations as we drive through the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This event is for families who have someone with a disability. Price includes staffing and round-trip transportation starting at WRRC. End time may vary depending on traffic and the number of cars at the speedway. Registration deadline is Dec 9.
