They learn leadership skills and how to be safe in, on and around the water. Demonstrations and hands-on activities encourage children to be proactive in water awareness at home and in public pools. Jr. Lifeguards learn basic water safety skills, lifeguarding skills, and health skills during each session. Participants are given the opportunity to shadow lifeguards at the pool. Lifeguard Explorers The Lifeguard Explorers program introduces lifeguarding, working in an aquatic environment, community service, resume building, employment skills and physical fitness. Lifeguard Explorers also have the option to participate in special events, volunteer opportunities and activities outside of the aquatic environment. A parent/guardian meeting is set for Sept. 14 and Nov. 2 at 5:30 p.m. at Heritage Park Aquatic Complex. A Lifeguard certification course is offered the last week of the session for those ages 15+ successfully completing the prerequisites listed below (dates will be provided in the parent meeting). Lifeguard Explorers interested in and eligible to take this course will be required to pay $35 to the American Red Cross. In person and online sessions must be completed and passed to obtain certification. Prerequisite for Lifeguard Training: 300-yard, non-stop swim followed by retrieval of a 10-pound submerged object in 7-10 feet of water and back to the starting point and two minutes of treading water. Basic competitive swimming skills are also discussed. Scouts must bring their merit badge application cards for completion. A change of clothes is recommended. Bring a pair of long pants and a long-sleeved shirt that can get wet. After successful completion, participants are certified in lifeguard training, first aid/CPR/AED for the professional rescuer, preventing disease transmission, and administering emergency oxygen. A required level of swimming ability and fitness is determined on the first day. The skills test includes a 300-yard, non-stop swim followed by retrieval of a 10-pound submerged object in 7-10 feet of water and back to the starting point. Attendance on all dates is mandatory. Proof of age is required to register. Registration closes one week before the course start date. Prerequisite: Completion of American Red Cross online lifeguarding course ($35 paid directly to the American Red Cross, in addition to cost listed below). Registered participants will be given information on how to complete the online component. Participants practice on canine and feline manikins, so please leave your pets at home. The workshop includes information on emergency preparedness for your furry friend. Participants receive a certification card upon completion. Upon successful completion, students (ages 16+) are issued new certification. You must complete all swimming assessments during the final test. Recertification is $90.
